Before the house has woken, Abi stands on the shore with Bestemor.

A canoe lies at the water’s edge. Inside are two lifejackets, a snorkel, flippers, towels, a picnic basket, the wide-brimmed hat Bestemor gave her and an anchor and rope.

With occasional glances at the house, they put on the lifejackets.

‘Hurry,’ Bestemor says. ‘Before anyone’s up. And you’ll have to pull this thing into the water, I don’t have the strength.’

‘Are you sure, I mean… I’m grounded, aren’t I? It’s not like swimming to Hvalryggøy. They’re going to see us. Dad’s going to go mental.’

Bestemor rolls her eyes. ‘You did a stupid thing before. It was dangerous. Is it dangerous now? The sea is calm. Will you forget lifejackets now? No. Are you alone, or putting your sister in danger? No. You think it is as simple as disobeying your father in all things one day, then doing exactly what he tells you the next? You are not really thinking, are you? And if we are sent to the doghouse, at least we’ll go together. The cottage is a nice doghouse. What can they do to you, Abi?’

Abi opens her arms and hurls herself at Bestemor.

‘Don’t squeeze me so tight, I am not a grapefruit.’
